Campsites in the Castilla-La Mancha region
Castilla-La Mancha is inextricably linked to the greatest literary figure in Spanish history, “Don Quixote”, by the writer Miguel Cervantes. If you decide to follow the “Ruta del Quijote” during your camping holiday, you will encounter the silent witnesses from this book. It is possible that from your campsite in Castilla-La Mancha you will visit the town of Consuegra. Here you will find the windmills against which Don Quixote fought. If you camp on or near the plateau of Castilla-La Mancha, you will always be close to a castle.
Most of the castles in this area were built between the 9th and 12th centuries, during the centuries-long struggle between the Christians and the Arabs. This latter group largely populated the Iberian Peninsula between 711 and 1492 AD. Although most campers pass through the Castilla-La Mancha area in order to reach their final destination on one of the Costas, or Portugal as quickly as possible, it is well worth paying a little more attention to the area.
Climate around the campsites in Castilla-La Mancha
“La Mancha” means “dry land” in Arabic (“manxa”). It is therefore hot and dry in Castilla-La Mancha in summer. The landscape around the campsites has vast expanses of flat areas, but in many places these are interspersed by hills and mountains. Due to its geographical location, completely enclosed by high mountains, the Spanish plateau (La Meseta, 650 m) is not affected by the sea at all. Nevertheless, it is the largest wine region in the world, with more than 143,000 hectares. If you camp near here, you have a beautiful area to visit. The Valdepeñas in this area in particular have become well-known and definitely worth a visit if you are camping in the area.
Toledo, a place in Castilla-La Mancha
Campsite El Greco is very centrally located in the Castilla-La Mancha area, near the monumental town of Toledo. Toledo, one of the oldest cities in Spain, has a very rich history and was the capital of the Iberian Peninsula already in the times of the Visigoths (534-712). Also during the Moorish rule it was one of the most important cities of the Arab empire and certainly the most important in “Al Andalus”.
After this, the city experienced a heyday as an independent kingdom due to the arms manufacture, the silk and wool industry. Even today, Toledo with its Gothic cathedral is the ecclesiastical capital of Spain. Besides the cathedral, the beautiful Alcázar is definitely worth a visit if you camp at a campsite nearby.
